Aqualani one step closer to debut
Source: Liverpool Echo
ALBERTO AQUILANI has taken a huge step towards making his Liverpool debut now he has started kicking a ball again for the first time in six months.
Rafa Benitez reported last week that his £20m midfielder was making good progress but erred on the side of caution as to when Aquilani might be seen in a Red shirt.
However, the Italian was given the green light to start doing some ball work again late last week and has continued to work on passing and shooting in the last couple of days.
There is a growing sense of anticipation amongst supporters about Aquilani, who was drafted in to fill the void left by Xabi Alonso’s move to Real Madrid.
But there is no chance of him launching his career in the cut and thrust of a potentially pivotal clash against Manchester United on Sunday week.
Benitez will be looking to ease Aquilani in gradually as the 25-year-old has not played a competitive game since Arsenal beat his old club Roma in the Champions League in March.
The reserves have a game against Sunderland at home next Wednesday but it could be that Benitez waits a further seven days before pushing him into the frame.
That would open up the prospect of Aquilani getting his first taste of English football in the Carling Cup fourth round clash at Arsenal on October 28.
Yossi “very happy” at Anfield

Yossi Benayoun
Yossi Benayoun has insisted that he is very happy at Anfield. Rumors stated that Manchester City were intrested in signing him in the January transfer window, but midfielder Benayoun, who signed a 2 year extension contract with Liverpool in July, said he is very happy at the club. His agent, Ronan Katsav, said:
Naturally a player playing well at Liverpool will always have other teams interested in him.
It is a great compliment that there is interest from high level teams across Europe, but Yossi is very happy at Liverpool and only in the summer agreed a new contract for another four seasons.

Leeds vs Liverpool Carling Cup 2009
Leeds will play Liverpool on Tuesday, in the Carling Cup. This should be a good match, as the 2 teams haven’t met for about 5 years. The game will be held at Ellen Road, which means Liverpool would’ve had to travel from London to Leeds in the space of a few days. Agger could start, but Aquilani and El Zhar are still injured. League 1 side Leeds have made a good start to the season, but have they got what it takes to beat the odds and come out of Ellen road the winners, and leave Liverpool crashing out the Carling Cup? We’ll find out soon.
TV: Sky Sports. Kick off approx 7:45 PM UK
Torres gives credit to Babel
Fernando Torres has gave his goal credit to substitute Ryan Babel, who assisted Torres’ winning header. The Spaniard said:
“Everyone knows Babel is a fantastic player. He played on the right wing and gave me a fantastic cross which was easy for me to attack the ball and score. It is easy for a striker when a cross is as good as that. He is a player with quality who can do things like this, so without Ryan I couldn’t have scored. It’s thanks to him I could score the goal to win it for us. We knew before the game that this was a difficult place to come and win. West Ham are a very good team at home but we now have momentum and we got the win.
